Upgrading or populating more RAM after the fact can be a bit complicated. If looking for budget, probably won't be a problem but features you might see discussed.īesides the CPU and GPU choices, be sure to consider how much RAM is needed. Should be soon, like Gen 5 cards for the new slots. Most sockets are currently PCIe 4, some PCIe5. They can be much, much faster than the SATA drives, SSD or spinning drives. They run off the PCIe system, sharing some of the data transfer capacity with the PCIe slots and SATA drives. Now there are also M.2 sockets, usually on the motherboard, which take an even faster type of SSD. They are faster than the spinning drives. Then solid state drives (SSDs) compatible with the SATA interface recent spinners are using. Used to be, there were spinning hard drives.

Something to be aware of but probably not needed if budget sensitive. Few if any cards for it yet, but Gen 4 cards can go in Gen 5 slots. There's also a Gen 5 PCIe, faster more data transfer lanes. DDR5 is faster, potentially a lot faster than DDR4. There may be some budget friendly opportunities with Gen 12 and DDR4 as demand shifts to Gen 13 and DDR5.

I believe you can upgrade from Gen 12 to 13 on the same motherboards, should you need to, perhaps needing a BIOS upgrade, and care to keep up with the power supply and cooling. You can find comparisons with recent AMD developments for Gen12s and Gen 13s. They tend to be more powerful than the previous generation, but that extra "power" takes more power and generates more heat.

If you've been away for a while, Intel recently went to a 13th Generation CPU. Explore any forums for their user communities. Even so, sometimes those minimums are awfully optimistic. Take a good look at the recommended minimums for performance for the particular software you want to use.
